As part of the enduring and special strategic partnership between India and the Russian Federation, the internationally acclaimed Kostroma Russian National Ballet is set to present Russia’s prestigious cultural and educational project, Global Dance Overture, at Kamani Theatre on March 3. The performance promises to be a vibrant celebration of artistic excellence and cross-cultural dialogue, underscoring the deep-rooted cultural ties between the two nations.
The evening will be inaugurated by Shri Vivek Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, who will attend as the Chief Guest. H.E. Mr. Denis Evgenievich Alipov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of India; Dr. Sandhya Purecha, Chairperson of Sangeet Natak Akademi; and Mrs. Elena Tsarenko, Director of the Russian National Ballet “Kostroma,” will also grace the occasion. Their presence reflects the importance both countries attach to cultural diplomacy as a pillar of bilateral cooperation.
The event is supported by the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in India, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. This collaborative effort highlights the institutional commitment on both sides to strengthening people-to-people connections through the arts.
At the heart of the evening lies the Russian National Dance Show, a grand choreographic spectacle regarded as Russia’s largest historical dance production. The show has captivated more than seven million spectators across 50 countries spanning five continents, earning global acclaim for its scale, artistry, and authenticity. Conceived by Yuri Tsarenko, Chief Choreographer and Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation, the production takes audiences on a journey through the deep roots and folk traditions of Russia’s multinational society.
Through an extraordinary palette of colours, elaborate costumes, and authentic choreography, the performance presents the diverse dance cultures of the peoples of the sunny Caucasus, Buryatia, Siberia, the Far North, and Central Russia. Each segment reflects the distinct identity, rhythm, and spirit of its region, while collectively portraying the vast historical and national diversity of the Russian Federation.

Adding a meaningful Indian dimension to the evening, Indian dancers will present “Jayati Jaya Mama Bharatam,” a specially curated choreographic tribute to India’s pluralistic cultural identity. This composition weaves together selected folk traditions from across India into a unified artistic narrative, symbolising harmony in diversity and reinforcing the shared ethos of cultural pride and inclusivity.
The Global Dance Overture initiative also extends beyond performance into education and exchange. On 2 March 2026, an educational workshop was held at Meghdoot Theatre-I, Rabindra Bhawan, in collaboration with Sangeet Natak Akademi. The programme featured dance demonstrations, cross-cultural workshops in Russian and Indian dance traditions, and a collaborative “Round Dance of Friendship” flash mob. Designed for young dancers and choreographers, the workshop fostered direct artistic engagement and creative dialogue between the two traditions.
The staging of Global Dance Overture in New Delhi marks a significant milestone in India–Russia cultural cooperation. At a time when diplomacy increasingly values cultural engagement, the event reaffirms dance as a universal language—one that transcends borders, strengthens mutual understanding, and deepens the bonds between peoples and nations.
